Electronic Data Interchange or "EDI" is the computer-to-computer electronic exchange of business data using standard document formats which are widely recognized both nationally and internationally. There are two major sets of EDI standards. UN/EDIFACT is the only international standard (in fact, a United Nations recommendation) and is predominant in all areas outside of North America where the US standard ANSI ASC X12 (X12) is predominant. The use of standardized data formats allows organizations to exchange common business information without having to customize their hardware or software system for each organization they do business with. EDI standards are designed to inform the EDI software as to which says which pieces of information are mandatory for a particular document, which pieces are optional and give the rules for the structure of the EDI document. The standards are similar to other building codes. Just as two houses can be built "to code" but look completely different, two EDI documents can follow the same standard and contain different sets of user information. For example a manufacturer of computer circuit boards might send a product's serial number while a manufacturer of footwear might choose to send size size, width, and color information.

Electronic transfer of EDI data is normally accomplished through the use of one of two methods: direct transfer via the Internet using FTP or another protocol, or consolidated, store and forward services where the consolidator acts as an intermediary between you and your trading partner. Many EDI solutions contain data mapping provisions that allows the user to create import maps that allow population of their business software data tables from inbound EDI tranmissions, and export maps designed to populate data transmissions back to their trading partners.
